Optical fiber technology was originally deployed to cover long distances between continents. Because these submarine cables are expensive to deploy, advanced technologies were developed to use the fiber bandwidth as efficient as possible. The high cost of these new technologies were shared among all users of the back-bone connections. With the development of novel PIC technology, these advanced technologies become a lot more affordable. Today PIC technology is appearing in medium and short range communication links, all the way down to the end user. This is an appealing business for product companies as well as the foundry businesses behind it.
About Dr. Ir. Boudewijn Docter
Dr. Ir. Boudewijn Docter obtained his MSc in Electrical Engineering in 2002 from Twente University and received his PhD degree in Photonics in 2009 from TU/e. He worked for BBV, Kymata, Alcatel and NTT before starting EFFECT Photonics in 2010. Dr. Docter leads the PIC development activities in the company.

EFFECT Photonics develops products for fiber-optic communication systems based on Photonic Integrated Circuit technology. The company is currently developing several DWDM products for access and metro networks. EFFECT Photonics is a spin-off company from TU Eindhoven and was founded in 2010.
