Silicon photonics in 3 µm SOI – Presented by Timo Aalto, VTT, at the Photonic Integration Conference 2018, which will take place on October 2, at High Tech Campus Eindhoven, The Netherlands.
Latest progress in the development of silicon photonics on VTT’s 3 µm SOI platform is presented. This includes active and passive components, as well as broadband I/O coupling solutions. Also some hybrid integration of III-V optoelectronics on SOI is presented.
About Timo Aalto
Dr. Timo Aalto has worked at VTT since 1997. His main research focus is on silicon-based photonics integration. He received his MSc and DSc in optoelectronics technology from the Helsinki University of Technology in 1998 and 2004, respectively. At VTT he leads the Photonics Integration team. He is one of the pioneers in Si photonics development.
What drives you?
The ability to integrate photonics and to manipulate light on small silicon chips for different applications.
What are the three things you would take with you on a deserted island?
Food, water, large boat
What emerging technologies/trends do you see as having the greatest potential in the short and long run?
Photonics-assisted artificial intelligence, quantum computing, miniaturized optical sensors & lidars
What kind of impact do you expect them to have?
Further digitalization and automation of the society. Increased safety and wellbeing.
What are the barriers that might stand in the way?
Need for large investments in R&D and production infrastruture (compared to e.g. software business).
What do you hope people to learn from your presentation?
Photonics is as important as electronics, but it is more scattered with respect to technologies and applications. There is room for a few different photonic integration technologies that are ideal for different applications and markets. Our technology is able to meet some of those needs.
