Photonic Integration: A key enabler for multi-measure and sensing in complex Infrastructure

Duo presentation by Marinus J. van der Hoek, Director / Photonics Innovator, VanderHoekPhotonics and Ruben van Ardenne, Manager Strategy and Innovation, Compass Infrastructure, The Netherlands

Photonics-based telecoms has accelerated the development and application of photonics-based sensing to a great extent. Nowadays, challenging conditions for sensing can be met using innovative principles, enabled by the nature of light.

From an industrial point of view, we are convinced photonics based sensing is the way forward and collaboration in the whole Photonics-based ecosystem is key.

In this talk we will present examples of field-tests and proof of principle projects using photonics-based sensing, emphasizing the decisive role of photonic integration to fertilize growth in the field of applications.

What drives you?
What drives me is to unlock the great potential of photonics as an enabling technology. Especially on the sensing side of business it is a young field, we have al lot to discover!

Why should the delegate attend your presentation?
They should attend because we have an inspiring vision on photonic applications, as well as the challenges we face in our quest for new applications.

What emerging technologies/trends do you see as having the greatest potential in the short and long run?
I believe the integration of chips in mobile devices and wearables/tools is an important development.

What kind of impact do you expect them to have?
Making the interrogators smaller and cheaper will expand the possibilities to compete with electronics.

What are the barriers that might stand in the way?
The fact that everyone is stille very ‘copper minded’, Photonics still seem to alien for the mainstreem public. Also the price is still a big hurdle.

“Special quote”
We bring light to the heart of your business, let’s meet to discuss your challenges!

About Ruben van Ardenne

I started my professional career as squad leader with the Dutch Combat engineers in the Royal Dutch Army. After 8 years a tour to Afghanistan and 3 years as instructor I decided to switch to a civil career. Studied Civil engineering at the Rotterdam school of applied sciences in the evening this way ended up at the contracting business. Since 2015 I have the responsibility to develop and manage the company strategy towards the future. We decided we should expand our knowledge of fiber optic infrastructure towards the future of IOT and AI. Sensoring is the important part of the puzzle we want to lay. I am proud of the steps me made so far, having a future oriented innovation path in every direction of our business. (Energy, ITS and Communication)
