Electro-Optic Circuit Boards – an advanced photonic chip packaging platform

Photonic integrated circuits are playing a key role in various next generation sensing and telecommunication applications. Packaging of such chips has become the bottleneck of their integration and deployment. A novel platform based on poylmer waveguides integrated with electrical PCBs is presented, which allows to simultaneously interface photonic chips electrically and optically at high port-densities. Design rules and examples of this novel chip-packaging platform are discussed and showcased.

What drives you?
Photonics is such an exciting technology! 21st century is the century of light, and I am driven by the many promises and possibilities which photonic technologies hold.

Why should the delegate attend your presentation?
I encourage everybody to attend who is interested to learn about how to package an advanced photonic chip with many in-/output ports.

What emerging technologies/trends do you see as having the greatest potential in the short and long run?
There are so many trending technologies these days – AI, machine learning, Lidar, quantum computing. The great thing is that photonic technologies are the driving force for most of them!

What kind of impact do you expect them to have?
While most of these technologies primarily focus on increasing computer power & decreasing costs, I very much hope (and believe) that they will also provide ecological (lower power consumption) and social (e.g. less accidents using self driving cars) benefits.

What are the barriers that might stand in the way?
The development of photonic technologies is costly! While there is a lot of photonic & optics research being done (especially in Europe), the hard part is the commercialization.
