The world-wide exponential growth of the Pokemon GO augmented reality game came out of nowhere. The roll-out is being applauded by mobile phone carriers, especially as mobile gamers need to use 4G networks rather than the home wifi. Playing the game puts a severe test on the phone’s batteries and the subscriber’s data-plan. Whilst Pokemon may be a fad, it is just the first step in the roll-out of augmented reality. Paul van Dijk explains why those planning next generation 5G networks need to consider coverage and capacity if they want more robust networks that are 10 times faster than today.

He holds a Ph.D. in Physics from the Technical University Eindhoven and a Master of Business Marketing from TIAS Nimbas School.
